SDG WATCH MEMBER’S CHARTER

Mission Statement

SDG Watch Europe is a broad, cross-sectoral, civil society alliance which aims to ensure that the EU and
its Member States meet all of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets, within Europe and
externally.

In order to realise the overall mission of SDG Watch Europe, member organisations agree to:

(I) Work cross-sectorally with other civil society organisations and stake-holders to ensure the
implementation of this ambitious global agenda.

(II) Develop and strengthen the work of SDG Watch Europe so that it becomes an important EU
interlocutor for governments and other stakeholders.

(III) Advocate for inclusive and participatory structures and mechanisms at EU & MS levels to
ensure full and effective SDG implementation ,within the EU and externally,

(IV) Work to ensure that the commitments to “leave no one behind” and to respect planetary
boundaries made by the EU and its MS when adopting the SDG framework are fully respected.

(V) Advocate for the policies required to fully implement the SDGs in EU internal and external
action , raise awareness of goals and targets amongst the general public, monitor and review
EU & MS progress on SDG implementation, and push for action where needed.

(VI) Promote a critical shift away from the current unsustainable development model, focused
almost exclusively on the market and economic growth, and target the European Union as a
crucial actor to bring about this change, acting within its own borders and globally.

(VII) Promote a Human Rights Based Approach in all of the policy, advocacy and campaign work
of SDG Watch Europe.

(VIII) Advocate for Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development and for the four dimensions of
sustainable development (environmental, social, economic and governance) to be reflected in
SDG implementation by the EU and its MS.

(IX) Identify and communicate the needs of civil society to the EU and to relevant international
institutions, and work to promote civil society space and fight shrinking space of civil society in
many countries in Europe and globally.

(X) Work within the SDG framework to ensure that governments and the private sector are held
to account to a much greater extent.

(XI) Maintain the highest standards of transparency and integrity in the governance and overall
functioning of SDG Watch Europe
